12-18 Months

Developmental Milestones

Developmental milestones are key skills or objectives that your child should obtain naturally on their own through growth and development. We track these milestones in the categories of cognitive, communication, social, emotional, adaptive, and physical development.

Cognitive

  • Child should be able to look at picture book with adults.

  • Child should be able to place a small object into a small container.

  • Child should be able to demonstrate use of every day items.

  • Child should be able to combine two related objects during play.

  • Child should be able to manage three to four toys by setting one aside when given a new toy.

Communication

  • Child should be able to follow directions about placing an item “in” and “on” another.

  • Child has a word sound, or sign for drink.

  • Child should use at least five words.

  • Child should point to at least three body parts when asked. .

  • Child should indicate “yes” or “no”in response to questions.

Social-Emotional

  • Child should separate from caregiver in familiar setting without crying.

  • Child should attempt to comfort others in distress.

  • Child should want to do many things without help.

  • Child should enjoy simple make-believe.

  • Child should look to caregiver for reassurance when faced with a novel situation.

Adaptive

  • Child should stir with a spoon.

  • Child should fuss when diaper needs to be changed.

  • Child should help with simple household tasks.

  • Child should try to wash own hands and face.

  • Child can use a straw.

Physical Development

  • Child uses one hand consistently in most activities.

  • Child can squat then stand again maintaining balance.

  • Child can creep backward down steps.

  • Child can climb low play equipment.

  • Child should be able to use hand to hold paper in place when drawing.
