Halloween sensory activities

Paige Flamm

Halloween is right around the corner! If you need some Halloween sensory activity ideas to do with your children over the next few days. Here are some ideas that are easy to put together and will help make some special memories with your children!

Halloween Sensory Activities:

Halloween sensory activities are essentially just festive activities that you can do with your children to stimulate one of their many bodily senses. These senses that we often discuss are:

  • Sight

  • Sound

  • Touch

  • Smell

  • Taste

  • Vestibular

  • Proprioceptive

Our aim is to share some activities that touch on each of these senses and you can pick one that sounds the most fun to do with your child leading up to Halloween.

Halloween Sensory Activity for Sight:

A great halloween activity that works on visual stimulation is a Halloween I-Spy page. This is great for tracking and finding key objects in a cluttered space. There are many free printables of these that you can find online.

Halloween Sensory Activity for Sound, Vestibular, and Proprioceptive Senses:

A great idea that incorporates many senses at one time is to have a Halloween dance party. You can have your kids dress up in their costumes and Tell Alexa, “Hey Alexa, play Halloween kid’s music!” and a fun playlist of festive Halloween songs to dance too. You also can find some great playlist options on spotify or youtube. Dancing and music is a great way to have your kids burn energy, and receive multiple forms of sensory input at once!

Halloween Sensory Bins for Touch:

Halloween sensory bins are a great way to incorporate touch/tactile senses. To do this simply fill a plastic bin with rice, beans, etc… and then you can hide a bunch of little Halloween trinkets inside such as spider rings, pumpkin erasers, whatever little items you can find at the dollar store without spending a ton of money. Once the bin is set up the way you want it, hand it over to your child and they can spend as long as they like hunting for all the goodies you’ve put into the bin.

Another spin on this activity would be to hide the Halloween items into some slime and they have to use their little hand muscles to dig everything out. This would be a great activity for fine motor and hand strengthening at home!

Halloween Sensory Activity for Smell:

A great halloween activity for smell would be a blindfolded candy contest. Put a blindfold on your child and let them hold an unwrapped piece of candy. Can they guess what it is? Do they smell chocolate, peanut butter, fruity scents, etc… This can be a fun and quick activity to do with your kids and it will be fun for them to see how many they get right!

Halloween Sensory Activity for Taste:

Get it in the kitchen and make a fun Halloween treat. This can work on so many different senses (proprioceptive, smell, touch, etc.) and at the end they have a fun treat they get to eat (taste)! You can make this as elaborate as making something from scratch, or get an easy treat at the store that you have to simply take out of the package and bake in the oven. This activity is totally scaleable to what you’re able to do at home at that moment!

We hope these Halloween Sensory Activities help get your holiday weekend off to a fun start! We would love to hear your fun ideas in the comments below!
